I’m Gillian Anderson and this is Masterpiece Classic.
Jane Austen, daughter of a poor rector in a small village. No dowry and very smart. Not likely to be anyone’s idea of a wife. Her father dies and leaves virtually nothing. Jane moves with her mother and sister to a small cottage. She writes books in the evening after doing her housework.
Her focus is morality and character. She writes a book about a young woman who is everything she is not. Who is young, rich and foolish. Jane calls her heroin « Emma ». Emma thinks she knows everything but she really understands nothing. She is a masterpiece of irony. The more wrong she is, the more we like her. Amazingly the book is a success.
The Prince Regent himself asked for a dedication, her family is thrilled but Jane is unimpressed. She doesn’t approve of the dissolute Prince Regent. She thinks he lacks character… Character is everything.
