X Files (with love)
David Duchovny: A movie about aliens? No, this is a romantic story.

Los Angeles (USA): The second X Files movie is out there with Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), secretly shot in vancouver and Portland (?) by Chris Carter, in a cinematic season that will be marked with sequels, remakes and pre-sequels. This TV series is a huge phenomenon, the first movie came out in 1998, earning more that 187 million dollars; it created legion of fans greedy of Mulder and Scully's paranoic cases; in the second feature, they will live a romantic relationship. "Because- Duchovny laughs- Chris, Gillian and I have always thought about the X Files as a problematic and sourprising romantic love story". We met in a luxurious hotel in Santa Monica, arriving from his house in Malibu, where he lives with his wife Tea Leoni, 2 kids, a lot of dogs and a vegetarian life; he is one of the most intelligent actors in Hollywood, he starts our conversation with a joke:" Welcome to my house". The magnificence of the suite is in contrast with his simple lifestyle, no red carpets, tough selection of scripts and projects after his directorial debut with House of D: good reviews, poor takings. One of his upcoming project is the second season of Californication:" I will try to direct a couple of episodes of this series, unfairly called Sex X. Hank Moody has the writer's block and he can give vent to stress with compulsive sex. My wife disagreed with me on the choise of this character, but now she changed her mind. The second season has no rules, more than the first one".
We can see him in Italy near Benicio del Toro and Halle Berry in "Oltre il fuoco" (aka "Things we lost in the fire"), where he plays a perfect dad and husband, who helps his junkie friend (Benicio), and then he get killed by a foolish guy. "I like extreme characters in their temperamental differences, I don't care about heroes. My projects always drift away from macabre and chilling TV series". "are you referring to Lost?", "I don't see it".
X Files 2 is linked to the first episodes of the series and it doesn't focus on aliens and special effects: "Our viewers now are 40 or 50 years old, like me, but some younger people seem to appreciate older tv series' mood. X Files 2, it doesn't have a title yet, goes in that direction, just like Sex & The City". Why do you heed all these clarifications? "cable TV and reality shows have changed our media's view; I'm always hold onto a different TV pattern, that has to be provocative and intelligent, at the same time, so I feel nostalgia for '70 USA movies like 'Shampoo', Hal Hasby's movies, or science fiction writers like Robert Heinlein. So the movie sums up all these contradictions. rap star Xzibit acts in it with me and Gillian, he plays a FBI agent, unusual role for him; another actor is Billy Connolly (who has Scottish origins), he plays a catholic priest, his character his primal. This dysfunctional cast helps us to capsizing latest TV episodes of the X Files".
He continues: "Supernatural always fascinates viewers because it's a religious search, the need to have a dialogue with God and to test things that only real faith explains away. There's always been a certain chemestry between Mulder and Scully, that now turns to love". he always recall that he chose to dig into human and society failures, since he started acting in movies like Kalifornia, near Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis. Who knows how he lives in Hollywood, where it's hard to find books in actors' houses, while he collects them. "California is interesting because I can surf sometimes, when I'm not thinking about sex, religion and literature. Tea labels Hank Moody as a wretched guy and prefers to read Tolkien's books. After the House of D experience, where I play a writer moved to Paris, she tries to avoid working with me on the same set". In summary: "In a place like Hollywood, where love and business are connected, it's preferable to discuss and watch our work at home. I put the research of morality, something we lost nowadays, in the hands of my characters".
